これでいいのだ

50年ほど前、少年向け週刊雑誌に人気マンガ「天才バカボン」が連載され私も楽しく読んでいました。ギャグ満載の内容ですが、毎回事件が落着すると、バカボンのパパが、「これでいいのだ」と締めのことばを言います。必ずしもハッピーエンドでない場合にもです。このことばは仏教者にとって、ブッダの大事な教えに聞こえます。ブッダは、人生は苦である、と言いました。人が体験することは必ずしも思うようにいかないことから来るつらさを意味しています。それに対して、ものごとをあるがままに受け止めることができれば、苦から開放されるのです。「これでいいのだ」は悟りを表していると言えます。

            バカボンという名前は、Bhagavatという古代インドのことばを連想させます。漢字では薄伽梵と書き、また世尊と訳されています。ブッダをたたえた呼び名のひとつです。作者の赤塚不二夫さんは、仏教に関心があったように思えます。

Korede-iinoda (It is alright)

            About fifty years ago, there was a popular manga (cartoon) series “Tensai Bakabon (Genius Bakabon)” in a weekly magazine for the juvenile people. I enjoyed reading it. The content was full of jokes. Each week, at the end of episode, Dad of Bakabon said the closing phrase, “Korede-iinoda (It is alright),” even when it was not a happy ending. For Buddhists, this phrase sounds like The Buddha’s important teaching. The Buddha said that our lives are suffering. Suffering means the pains that come from the reality of what we experience does not necessarily go as we wish. On the other hand, if we can accept the reality as they are, we will be freed from suffering. “Korede-iinoda” expressed the state of enlightenment.

            The name Bakabon reminds me of an ancient Indian word Bhagavat. It is one of the honorific titles of The Buddha that is translated as “World-Honored One.” Fujio Akatsuka, the author of this manga seems to have been interested in Buddhism.
